To Discover Your Personal Style, you must start with the foundation of knowing your body type. Knowing your body type is the foundation to dressing well and owning your style.

In this series titled STYLE 101, I’ll share with you  tips to knowing your style and building your wardrobe. Today, I’ll discuss the 4 most common body types/shapes.

There are 4 main body types: Apple, Banana, Pear and Hourglass.

Here’s the break down of each body type:

  • Apple 
    • Women with an Apple shape tend to have broader shoulders and bust, with  narrow hips. This shape is also known as the downward triangle
  • Banana or Straight
    • Women with a Banana, or straight, rectangular shape, have a  waist measurement that is usually smaller than her hip or bust size
  • Pear
    • Women with a Pear shape have a larger/wider hip measurement than that of her bust. This shape is also known an the upward triangle
  • Hourglass
    • The hip and bust measurement of an hourglass shape are usually similar in size, with a narrow waist

With this foundation, it’s easier to move on to finding what works and doesn’t work for your shape. It also makes Discovering Your Personal Style more fun and rewarding.

In case you’re wondering, I have a Pear Shape! My hips are larger and wider than my bust, while I have a smaller waist measurement 🙂

    I enjoyed reading this. 🙂

    I’m closer to an apple (and I hate eating apples, lol). I’ve learned that it’s best to dress in garments that flatter one’s body type, so I tend to avoid clingy garments that highlight the difference between my shoulders and hips..

    1. Haha. I don’t mind eating apples 🙂

      Yes, it sure is good to dress for your body type. In doing so, you’re bound to feel more confident and comfortable in your skin. For me, I’m to highlight my waist, and not wear clothes that focus much attention on my hips.

  2. I would have said Pear shape for myself because of the ratio of Hip to Bust. but the hips is actually small sha. And with an A-cup boobs, anybody’s hips (whether there’s something there or not) will be bigger than bust. So I think I’m faux-pear. :/

    1. Hey Oluchee.

      There are many people with a wider hip measurement, and smaller bust. I’ve seen many! 🙂
      Are your hips smaller than your bust (in measurement), or you just think it’s small? I’ll suggest remeasuring yourself to get a more accurate body type.

    1. I’m a pear shape too! Ha. Oh yes, it can be tricky to dress our shape, but once you find what works, it makes getting dressed easier. I’m glad the information was helpful 🙂
